Goondiwindi councillors visit the Maranoa to talk tourism

Two members of the Goondiwindi local council made the trip out to Roma on Tuesday to talk tourism and visit the Roma attractions.

The councillors, who are visiting a number of towns in south-west Queensland in the next few months, planned their tour after attending the 2017 Bush Councils Convention where regional tourism featured heavily on the agenda.

Goondiwindi councillor Lachlan Brennan said the aim of the trip was to unite local councils as they strived towards similar tourism goals.

"The aim of this trip is to build networks with our neighbouring councils so we can see and understand what they are doing in the areas of tourism and what upcoming projects for economic development are in the pipeline,” Cr Brennan said.

"It's also to see if our councils can come together to face some of our joint issues.”

Maranoa councillor Cameron O'Neil said the tour was a great opportunity to learn from neighbouring regions.

"During the Bush Council meeting a couple of weeks ago, where many of the regional councils came together, Lachlan pitched the idea of a tour south-west of the state to meet with local governments and we jumped at the chance,” Cr O'Neil said.

"Today we visited the Big Rig, one of our premier tourism spots, and we've spoken on how we wish to improve that asset to showcase the oil and gas industry in the area.

"We have now taken a tour of the saleyards, it being the largest in the southern hemisphere, and we are discussing the tourism we can grow off the back of this community asset.

"It's not all about what Roma has to offer, but what is in the broader Maranoa region as a whole.

"We want to make sure as tourists travel through Goondi up into Roma and onwards, we can hold them here to shop and stay in our hotels, even for one extra evening.”

This tour comes as the Maranoa Regional Council voted to submit a number of projects for partial funding by the 2017 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, run by the Department of Infrastructure.

Included in this list is a project to improve the Roma Saleyards by adding 91 selling pens to the facility and a Big Rig tourism enhancement project to improve the night show and oil patch exhibit.

After staying in Roma on Tuesday night, the Goondi councillors continued to the Western Downs region the following day.
