Golfers putt in for a cause

GOLF: Avid golfers from across the Maranoa gathered at the Roma Golf Club on Saturday to enjoy an afternoon on the greens while supporting a good cause.

The weekend was dedicated to supporting the Bliesner family, with five-month-old Austin being diagnosed recently with leukaemia.

A former colleague of Austin's father, Andrew, and organiser of the fundraising event, Nathan Moody said the weekend was a great way to support a family facing adversity.

"We're just trying to raise a bit of money through the golf day by doing a bit of fundraising so that's why everyone is here in force today,” he said.

"A couple of my workmates and myself thought it'd be a good idea to just try and do something for the family who are doing it a a bit tough at the moment.

"There's been a heap of support from all the local businesses and we were hoping for about 60 players, which we've already got, so any more would be a bonus.

"It tugs on the heartstrings when you have a young child who has to go through this sort of thing and I can't imagine what it's like for the family.”

While the Bleisners face an arduous road, Austin has already shown plenty of fight after undergoing treatment in Brisbane.

"He's just started his second bout of chemotherapy after showing positive effects from the first round,” Moody said.

"The family has had to pay quite extensive amounts of money for trial treatments to get Austin through,” he said.

The golf club also contributed to the cause, donating green fees on the day while over $3000 was raised from other fundraisers on the day.
