Glamour couple look for double success in pool

Emily Seebohm and Mitch Larkin, the glamour couple of Australian swimming, will be gunning for a 100m backstroke golden double at the Rio Olympics this morning.

Seebohm has plenty of work to do, however, if she is to banish the demons of London 2012, having gone in as the gold medal favourite there only to be upset by American Missy Franklin.

The Australian made a hash of the start in her semi in Rio yesterday and ended up scraping into the final in seventh place in 59.32 seconds, well behind US pacesetter Kathleen Baker (58.84).

"Some of my skills were a bit sloppy tonight," Seebohm said. "I don't know what I can put it down to other than a late night.

"But I'm ready to come back tomorrow and hopefully do a better job."

Fellow Australian Maddie Wilson clocked 59.03 to also claim a spot in the final.

Larkin won the 100m and 200m backstroke double at the world championships in Russia last year and would dearly love to add an Olympic gold medal to his collection.

He was the third fastest qualifier overall from the semis, behind Americans Ryan Murphy and David Plummer.

"Obviously, having a 200m background, my speed comes towards the end when the other guys seem to die a bit," Larkin said.
