Gladiators pile on big score
RUGBY LEAGUE: Roma Cities has sent an almighty warning shot to the rest of the Roma District Rugby League competition by thumping the St George Saints 92-0 at Arthur Beetson Oval on Sunday afternoon.
In front of a boisterous home crowd, Cities players were keen to put on a show for their supporters, racing to an 18-0 lead just before the drinks break.
There were tries to almost every player on the Cities roster, with Roma scoring all over the park and seemingly at will towards the end of the match.
The home side jumped to a 36-0 lead at half time but only accelerated after the break, with the Saints having no answers to a team that appears to have found its groove after losing to the Wallumbilla Surat Red Bulls the previous week.
In a sea of highlights, Cities goalkicker Joey Packer kicked 10 straight conversions before passing on kicking duties after notching double digits.
Cities captain Chris Gellar said the team went into the match with a simple game plan of controlling the football.
"We focused on just completing our sets and didn't do anything too over the top and the boys stuck together in defence,” Gellar said.
For the Saints, the result was bitterly disappointing, given their narrow loss to Chinchilla last week and was no doubt a tough road trip home for a team looking to make an impression.
Cities will next play an in-form Chinchilla side, which is coming off two successive victories after beating Mitchell 28-14 on Sunday. In reserve grade, St George was victorious, winning 24-20.
