Girls from the bush take on state rugby league
Rugby League: A group of girls from around the southwest live by the motto "anything boys can do, we can do to” and are going all the way to Longreach to prove it.
For the first time, an under-16s girls' southern outback team will head to play a trial match against their northern affiliates, before an outback squad is decided.
That side will then go on to compete in a state carnival in Coolum later this year.
Sports trainer Jaime Jukes said it was an exciting time in rugby league, with many of the U16s new to the game.
"We took an U14s side last year but we never had enough interest to take an U16s,” Juke said.
"We had over 50 girls front up to play under 16s at the Adrian Vowles Cup in Charleville.
"For a lot of them, it was their first time ever playing and they certainly didn't hold back.
"A lot of girls had never tackled before (the cup in) Charleville but there was a lot of excitement.”
Despite disappointing numbers at a trial game in Mitchell a few weeks ago, Jukes said those who made the squad were more than up for the challenge.
"The girls are a bit nervous but they all love the game and they're excited to get out there and play,” she said.
"We are hoping to get a permanent girls' side going in Roma.
"I think because now women's rugby league is really starting to take off and it's on TV.
"It gives the girls who aren't necessarily netball girls another avenue to play contact sport and seeing it played by women on TV has really inspired them.
"They are so talented, and really get stuck into it.”
Both the U14s and U16s sides will head to Longreach today before they kick off for two games apiece on Saturday.
