Gardener ‘suggests woman pay debt with sex act’

A TOWNSVILLE woman says her gardener told her there were "other ways to pay" a debt to him and has since been hit with a backlash.

Shantelle Stephens says she was called "cute" and asked if she wanted to "work something else out" to pay an overdue bill for lawn mowing.

She said she owed the gardener $40 but was unable to pay him the money when he delivered the service on January 11, media reports.

Ms Stephens said she offered to pay the man an extra $10 for the late payment when he suggested she pay in a different way.

"He texts me back saying 'there are other ways to pay' and that he 'thinks I'm cute',' her post read.

She described feeling "disgusted' at what she thought was a proposition to do a sex act in exchange for the money she owed.

She declined the offer and told him she had a boyfriend.

"What's wrong with guys these days," she posted on social media.

"I'm not stuck up or full of myself at all.

"I think that it is unprofessional and degrading.

"(Am) I overreaching?"

She finished the post with the hashtag #NotMyMowerGuyAfterThis.

"I told him before he started mowing that I didn't have the money until next week and he said that it was fine, I wasn't going anywhere. I am a regular client of his," she said.

A post to Facebook quickly generated about 800 comments, with some people suggesting she should have settled the debt.

"Pay what you owe or don't use the service," one social media user wrote.

The alleged incident comes after the rise of the "Me Too" movement on social media.

The hashtag is used on social media to help demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment, especially in the workplace.

That has also led to the Time's Up movement, an initiative that aims to help fight sexual violence and harassment in the workplace through lobbying and providing funding for victims.
