RACING: Even the switching of venues and threat of rain couldn't keep horse racing fans and punters away from Bassett Park on Saturday for the Roma Turf Club Races.

The five-race meet was organised in place of the cancelled Surat Diggers Race Day, with patrons still turning up to enjoy classic country racing.

It turned into a successful day for south-west trainers, with Craig Smith, Benjamin Waldron, Wayne Baker (all Roma), Lesley Baker (Charleville) and Pat Webster (St George) all winning races on the day.

Smith's New Zealand gelding Onehundredclicks, rode by Alisha Taylor, took out Race 5 - the Ladbrooks Butchery Benchmark 60 Handicap.

Waldron's win came in Race 1, with Cecily Eaton riding Constellation Miss to victory in the Roma Tyre and Battery Maiden Plate.

Wayne Baker's San Dieguito, ridden by Bruce Powell, won in the XXXX QTIS Benchmark 55 Handicap, beating out more fancied racers to claim Race 2.

Lesley Baker took out Race 3, the Maranoa Regional Council Benchmark 60 Handicap, with Mezzanotte, claiming $4550 worth of prize money in the process.

Webster won Race 4 with King of the Flame, ridden by Lesley Tilley.
