Gallery: Maranoa celebrates its new Australians

JUST last week, these 16 people were hard-working Maranoa people from all walks of life.

Now, they can all call themselves Australians.

Our region celebrated yet another round of outstanding people from different former nationalities becoming citizens on Wednesday night at the Ernest Brock Room.

Supported by plenty of family and friends, the new citizens came from plenty of different backgrounds, including India and the Phillipines.

New citizen and Surat resident Himani Kapoor said she was proud to call herself an Australian.

"Australian is very famous in India and we'd heard about it a lot when my husband and I lived over there,” she said.

"Australians are nice, kind-hearted people so it's good to be part of a wonderful country.”
