Heron Island holiday a pleasant surprise for locals

AT a time when our family life was at its very lowest with a very ill matriarch and three confused little kids as to why their mum was unable to care for them, when things finally started to improve, the Kenzler family thought it would be a perfect time to get away.

Heron Island being out of the Gladstone port made it a very easy choice, a two hour boat ride out past many islands (mroe than twenty islands).

Even though they had lived in Gladstone for four years, they had no idea what was exactly 'in their backyard'.

The entire experience was amazing, from the arriving cocktail and information session, to the sheer natural beauty of the island.

Mainly untouched and raw, with a turtle digging her nest and laying her eggs at our back door.

There were things about Heron that we had no idea about - there are no waves, there are no sand flies, there are no mosquitos and basically no other annoying bugs.

Being able to walk straight off the sand and straight onto coral was an amazing experience.

The kids - who were 7, 5 and 3 years-old at the time still talk about the 'best holiday of their life' three years later.
