Frosty fired up for Supercars endurance events

MOTORSPORT: Prodrive Racing's Mark Winterbottom is leaving nothing to chance as he looks to end his winless streak in Supercars at Sandown this weekend.

The 2015 championship winner is on his longest winning drought in three years, going 21 races without a victory since Pukekohe last year.

Keen to end the streak and guide Prodrive to its third win of the year, he will team up with Dean Canto for the upcoming Pirtek Endurance Cup, beginning with the Sandown 500, which starts today.

It is the second straight year the duo has raced together.

"We're going all out at Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast," Winterbottom said about this weekend.

"This year, we've had a big crack at putting all our best bits in."

Winterbottom can do that after being virtually eliminated from the championship hunt this year.

He is currently sixth, 553 points behind DJR Team Penske's Scott McLaughlin, who leads the championship.

No one in the history of the sport has come back from that position at this time of the year to win the crown.

Winterbottom admits this year will be different after being in championship contention the previous few years.

"Normally when you are in contention you are very conservative when you go into the races, not in the approach, but bits going into the car," he said.

"We've had a big push for the endurance races.

"If we can win one of those races (Sandown, Bathurst, Gold Coast) it can turn our year around."

He also has motivation to win for his co-driver, particularly at the Bathurst 1000 next month.

"The race can be won or lost with co-drivers and I've got one of the best in the category," he said.

"Dean's been at the team now for about 10 years.

"He knows everyone and slots straight in.

"He's done I think 19 Bathursts now and never won one and finished second. He's pretty pumped to get a result, so hopefully that motivation, that attacking attitude going in, serves us well and we get a good result."
