Former Noosa chef dies in Sumatra motorbike crash

FORMER Noosa chef Ben Haigh lived more in his 38 years than most people will in 90.

The popular surfing identity (pictured) died in a motorbike accident near his business, Underground Surf Tours, in Sumatra on April 7.

He started the business four years ago, employing locals, to share one of the best surf spots in the world with others like him.

Ben's brother Cameron said it had always been "his big passion to get something operational at a budget rate".

And just as the business was starting to flourish, with Ben branching out into surfboard making and looking at other accommodation, the accident happened.

"He worked in a whole lot of different places around Noosa, including Bistro C," Cameron said.

"Of course it is so unexpected. He had so much of a get up and go attitude.

WHAT'S MAKING NEWS ON THE COAST TODAY

"He was an inspirational guy to a lot of people.

"We were all so proud of him.

"He did things and had his own vision, he knew it was going to be a monumentous task, but he pulled it off.

"We want to make sure he didn't go in vain. We want to ensure his legacy is the vision he started."

Ben's mum Chris said he started working as a chef in Noosa 19 years ago and had worked in many of the best-known restaurants.

Then he was offered a dream job of cooking aboard boats for surf company Quicksilver.

"He met Kelly Slater, he baked his birthday cake for him once," Mrs Haigh said.

A service for Ben will be held at Gregson and Weight's Noosa chapel at 1.30pm tomorrow.

Family and friends are invited to attend.
