Snow forecast a flurry for region's tourism operators

MOTELS are booked out, tourists are planning their trips and all eyes are on the skies ahead of forecast snow this weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed snow is likely to fall on the Southern Downs by Monday.

The forecast follows reports of light snow in Eukey and sleet in Stanthorpe yesterday morning.

Forecaster Annabelle Ford said temperatures would drop below zero on the Granite Belt at the weekend.

"On Friday night cold dry air will push through but we're not expecting any snow," she said.

"The latest information is showing a small chance of snow and more likely sleet on Monday night."

The best chances for snowfall are higher outlying areas such as Mt Tully, Eukey and Girraween National Park.

Tourism operators across the region are fully booked for the weekend.

Girraween Environmental Lodge manager Kelly Devine said accommodation for this weekend had been booked out for the past 12 months.

"It's all about the snow," she said.

"I could have sold the place four or five times, I've had people send emails asking to book for when it snows.

"This winter period has all been about the snow from last year and when we expect it (this year)."

Allure Boutique Villas at Mt Tully, east of Stanthorpe, sits in a prime position for snow.

Owner Marion Carrick said while she didn't have people mentioning the snow specifically, she had plenty of people booking accommodation.

"In winter we're generally full booked on weekends so it's a bit hard to tell whether it's due to snow or not," she said. "If we get snow it will be an excellent thing for the region."
