Fly-blown toilet has Inksip campers in a spin

CAMPERS on Inskip Point have lashed out at authorities for not properly maintaining a toilet block on the end of the Point that has become fly-blown and is making visitors sick.

Gympie man Bevan Udris, 75, said he had been going to Inksip Point for the past 40 years and had never seen anything like it.

He spent the last two weeks camping there but packed up yesterday after spending two days sick in bed, leaving in disgust because of flies at the toilets servicing his campsite.

Inskip is about to be invaded by Schoolies and school holiday crowds.

"You open the lid and it's like a swarm of bees flying out at you," Mr Udris said of the volume of small black flies spewing out of the toilet.

"They are invading the campsites and landing on the food. A group of Victorians all went down really sick and now they have packed up and gone back.

"I have had a go at the rangers about it, but all they do is come out with a can of Mortein and spray the flies."
Mr Udris said another toilet block 200m away was "as clean as a whistle"

A Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service spokeswoman said the agency, which manages the Inskip Point camping areas, is aware of concerns about the toilets.

She said the toilets' sealed vault system "can be prone to emitting odours under certain conditions.

"They were most recently pumped out this week and the ventilation (is) working.

"The flies are believed to be vinegar flies, naturally occurring (but) more prevalent in warmer weather.

"Rangers are spraying the toilets today.

"QPWS does not believe there are any health risks."
