Flood pain still lingers years later
THREE years ago to the day I was sitting stranded in the Gympie newsroom as floodwaters broke the banks of the Mary River.
Although Gympie was going under and we had our own emergency to deal with, the images of flood and destruction coming out of the Bundaberg newsroom were something to behold.
As the week unfolded and the water receded the full extent of the damage was revealed.
Bundaberg and its people were hit hard.
I know people in this newsroom that didn't go home for two weeks.
The office was out of action for more than four months.
It was bad but, compared to the hardest hit areas of Bundaberg, the NewsMail got off lightly.
I haven't been here long but a lot of people I have met are still getting on their feet now, three years after Bundaberg's worst disaster.
A lot of people will have the mental scars for the rest of their life.
For most of us life goes on but it's important for us to understand that there are still people hurting from the 2013 flood.
