Flood consultation planned for Mitchell and Amby

IT IS not just Roma that has plans for flood mitigation, the towns of Mitchell and Amby are also on the way towards a long term solution.

Floodwaters inundated Over three-quarters of the homes in Mitchell in the February 2012 floods while Amby also suffered when the Amby Creek broke its banks.

Now Maranoa Council has said it has engaged Brisbane-based specialist consultants BMT WBM to do a flood mitigation study for those two towns.

Council said BMT WBM will undertake a similar process as was undertaken in Roma to examine mitigation options for Mitchell and Amby.

"BMT WBM has recently undertaken an extensive range of flood studies for the Queensland Reconstruction Authority," a Council spokesperson said.

"It is an anticipated a community workshop, similar to the one undertaken in Roma, will occur later this month in Mitchell and Amby to gauge the communities' thoughts and opinions on flood mitigation in these areas.
"Residents will be advised once a time and date has been scheduled."

Maranoa Mayor Rob Loughnan said the State Government has already allocated $720,000 for the relocation of the Mitchell pump station Number 1 while $34,848 has been confirmed for gauges and monitoring on the Maranoa River north of Mitchell.

"For all flood mitigation solutions in Roma, Mitchell and Amby, we are pursuing the most cost effective option with the least impact on our residents, whom have already been through so much," Cr Loughnan said.
