Arson suspected after blaze lights up The Hummock

ARSON is suspected to be the cause of a fire on The Hummock in the early hours of Monday morning.

Two fire trucks and eight crew worked to put out the fire on Karl Rehbein Ave where a large stack of cane mulch from last years crush was burning.

It is unknown why the stacks caught fire.

Officer-in-charge Bundaberg station Trevor Duncan said the blaze started just after 3am and there was no known cause at this stage.

He said arson could be likely.

"These sort of things don't light themselves," he said.

"It's a smouldering type fire and likely to have a lot of flare-ups."

Station officer Duncan said it was lucky there was no buildings close by.

"It's quite isolated and not threatening other structures,"

"The cane bales were there from last years crop."

A Burnett Heads Rural Fire team were called to help monitor and dampen down the stack.
