Fire cancer compensation report due

THE committee considering volunteer controversial firefighter cancer legislation will hand its report to the Queensland Parliament today

The Finance and Administration Committee has been considering amendments to the Workers' Compensation Act to provide disease compensation to paid and unpaid firefighters.

Queensland's 35,000 rural brigade members want the State Government to change a clause that says volunteer firefighters have to attend 150 events - such as fires or floods - before being eligible for compensation.

Rural Fire Brigades Association Queensland general manager Justin Choveaux says the amendments imply that paid firefighters need attend just one event in the minimum qualifying period to be eligible for compensation.

The committee received 213 written submissions on the proposed changes.
