Simmons misses out on All-Star start

AUSTRALIA'S basketball phenom Ben Simmons has missed out on being named an NBA All-Star starter, finishing third in voting.

Instead, Boston Celtic's Kyrie Irving and Toronto Raptor DeMar DeRozan earned the starting roles on the Eastern Conference team.

Despite a huge social media campaign to get Simmons nominated, the Philadelphia 76ers star finished more than 300,000 votes behind DeRozan.

However, all is not lost for the Rookie of the Year favourite with the All-Star game reserves to be announced next week.

The All-Star reserves are selected by the NBA's head coaches and announced on January 23.

In the East, Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, Milwaukee powerhouse Giannis Antetokounmpo and Simmons 76ers teammate Joel Embiid are the three starting forwards.

Warriors pair Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, Pelicans twins towers Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins and Houston guard James Harden will start for the Western Conference.

James and Curry were named captains.

Full All-Star rosters are announced on January 25 with the game to be played on February 18 in Los Angeles.
