Final steps for council to protect domestic cats
FERAL cats are in the sights of the Maranoa council as final amendments were made to the mandatory registration fees.
At the last council meeting on June 12, councillors voted to have domestic cats registered from July 1, however fees would be waived for the first 12 months.
On Wednesday, community safety councillor Puddy Chandler put forward a motion amending the fees and charges to make sure there were no stray conceptions when it came to residents' furry friends.
Cr Chandler sought to update the community safety fees and charges to reflect free or nil charge for cat registration for the 2019-20 financial year.
She also recommended the description for impoundment release fee for a registered cat or dog be updated from first offence in registration period to first offence in a 12-month period.
Cr Chandler said the initiative ensured domestic cats were protected and feral cats were identified.
Mayor Tyson Golder spoke against the motion and said there should not be mandatory registration for cats. It was carried 8-1.
