VIDEO: Firie's brave stand as burning hotel collapses

WHEN an entire building on fire collapsed in front of Roma Auxiliary firefighter Lieutenant Danny Duncan, he didn't budge.

Hose in hand, he stood his ground against the 20-metre high flames and the crumbling building.

What was he thinking when the bricks and flaming pieces of wood fell towards him?

"You don't really think, you just try and get the job done," Lt Duncan said.

"The roof collapsing made it easier to get water in there and control the fire.

"People have said I didn't take a step back, but I did. It's hard not to."

Lt Duncan was one of 14 brave Roma Fire and Emergency Service officers who fought to keep the blaze contained.

For hours the firefighters blasted their hoses onto the flaming rubble in an effort to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring businesses.

"The effort from the crews was great," Mr Kelly said.

"That, combined with the firewalls constructed next to Subway and the building north to the laneway, stopped it from spreading," he said.

"The hot dry weather we have been having and the intense fire burning the old timber made it challenging to fight.

"Preservation of life is our number one focus, once we knew everybody was out and could no longer attempt to combat it internally our focus was to fight it externally and stop its spread."
