Fifty years of learning celebrated in Injune

INJUNE was an inland sea of memories on Saturday, as the town's high school celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The school grounds were packed with visitors from all parts, as former students, teachers and families all returned to the scene of their education.

Proceedings were led by current principal Sue Anderson who arrived as a teacher in Injune in 1976, married a local and stayed on, being in her current job for the last seven years.

"I've been here nearly 40 years, so you could say, I'm almost a local," Sue said.

Among the visitors was Paul Masson, now retired in Yuleba but who was principal at the time the school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1988 - with one vivid memory of the day.

"I remember Malcolm Stewart parachuting onto the school lawn," Paul said.

"There wasn't a great deal of space for him to land on!"

Dennis O'Brien was the first maths and science teacher when the secondary opened in 1963 and also returned for the 25th anniversary.

"I'm back again today and I suppose I'll be here for the 75th anniversary - I'll only be 96!" Dennis said.

Dennis remembered the chaotic days when the secondary started.

"All the school equipment arrived in two boxes and it took us two days to unpack them all," Dennis said.

"There was stuff in there that wasn't on our checklist - so it never got used."

Dennis also remembered a science experiment in the early days that didn't quite go according to plan.

"We decided it would be a good idea to make chlorine," he said.

"After it blew up we all had to evacuate the building for half an hour.

On Saturday there was no such drama but a lot of laughter and tears as old friends caught up.

The school had a roll call by year on the oval and there were tours of the classrooms and official speeches, as well as a commemorative book celebrating the school's half century.
