Feedback to be tabled for controversial Maranoa restructure

Maranoa Regional Council is set to take part in the most monumental vote since 2008 in an upcoming council meeting, but uncertainty still looms about the historic vote.

The vote that could radically change the governance of the council, changing the number of directors from three to eight, including five that will cover the former shire areas prior to 2008.

The other three will be for Corporate and Community Services; Regional Development, Facilities and Environmental Services; and Engineering.

This proposal is part of Tyson Golder’s ‘operating locally’ policy, which he campaigned on during the 2020 election.

The council is expected to discuss the community feedback from the consultation period in tomorrow’s council meeting, January 27, although it is unclear whether the feedback will be considered by all councillors, and whether or not the matter will go to vote tomorrow.

Most councillors have been silent about their thoughts on the matter and when the policy will be implemented, with only four providing responses to the Western Star about the decision.

Councillor George Ladbrook has said, “I have yet to personally receive any negative feedback from the general public.”

But the response from community members about the proposed change has been highly controversial.

Some community members have publicly responded to the proposal urging for more information to be released and for the number of directors to be cut back.

Councillors Johanne Hancock, Cameron O’Neil, and Wendy Taylor, have told the Western Star that they are unsure of the time frame that the proposal would be implemented, or even when it would be voted on.
