Federal MP Bruce Scott is not big on same-sex marriage
FEDERAL MP Bruce Scott said he is "not going to spend much time thinking" about same-sex marriage equality.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott hinted that a same-sex marriage bill should be brought before a Parliament, with the possibility of a free vote.
Despite Ireland legalising same-sex marriage last week and a strong push from the public, Maranoa MP Bruce Scott said his position on the topic would stay the same.
"My position will remain supporting what the party has debated, also what I said to the people leading up to the last election - marriage is between a man and a woman," he said.
"Sure (public) opinions may change, but I'm certainly not going to spend much time thinking about this.
"I believe I would be reflecting the overwhelming majority of opinions (in my electorate)."
"I'm not lying awake at night thinking about it; I'm getting on with the job I've got."
Mr Scott said based on the emails and letters he has received, his constituents made it clear they were opposed to any changes to the existing law regarding marriage.
"There are far bigger issues as a nation that we should be addressing," he said.
