'My son's death made a statement': Dad tells of heartache

A FATHER whose son's funeral was crashed by police that set up road blocks and drug tests said he won't let the ordeal ruin the memory of his son's last send-off.

David Henzell is not a member of an illegal bikie gang, but he is considered an associate under the VLAD laws because his daughter is dating the Black Uhlans M.C. Sergeant at Arms Chris Hawes.

Mr Henzell said in time the police presence at the service on Friday would fade in his mind.

But he will never forget the support from the 300 people who turned out to the service to show their love and support for the family.

"My main concern was to give my son a good send off," Mr Henzell said.

"We did that. I feel for the people who were pulled over. It spoilt the day a bit and showed a lot of disrespect."

Mr Henzell said his family deserves an apology, but he won't be holding his breath waiting for one.

"I know I won't get one," he said.

"To be honest I feel for the police that were ordered to go out there that day. I'm sure there were some who didn't enjoy what they were doing.

"Maybe my son's death has made a statement here…. What freedom do we have if we can't bury our loved ones in peace?

"The important thing is that I have lost my son. Police or no police, I did my best to give him a good day."

Queensland Police were acting under the strict VLAD laws and while officers didn't stop patched Black Uhlans member Chris Hawes, or David Henzell; the car carrying the grieving widow and James' sister was pulled over and both women were breath tested.
