'Fat chicks won't help': Air conditioning job advert ire
"YOU will be crawling in roofs, you will be getting dirty, you will be working through the hottest days of summer and fat Australian chicks will sit inside in the air conditioning, not offer you a drink or lift a finger to help clean up. …. Young dudes who don't know s***t can start on 10 - 15 (dollars). Most likely 10 but you'll go to 15 if you are good."
These lines from a job advertisement on Gumtree have landed their author in hot water for sexism, discrimination and offering illegal pay rates.
Air Conditioning Expert Brisbane hoped the advert would help it recruit electrical sub contractors to work on a range of projects over the summer period in Queensland.
The advertisement, posted on August 12, has since been removed from the classifieds website.
ARM Newsdesk tried to reach the company for comment but our calls were not answered.
"If you want an appenticeship (sic) if you just left school, if you have your trade certificate we need you for this summer," the advertisement said.
"Qualified trades can have 30 per hour + van and phone. Or Subby (sic) rate per install.
"Trades assistants anywhere from 15 - 25 depends on what you know.
"You will be crawling in roofs, you will be getting dirty, you will be working through the hottest days of summer and fat Australian chicks will sit inside in the air conditioning, not offer you a drink or lift a finger to help clean up, while you get sunburnt, dehydrated and disorientated (sic) outside installing air conditioning for her comfort.
"Then she will tell us we are all equal.
"That's our life. We are men. We wouldn't trade places with her anyway."
The Electrical Trades Union Queensland told the Brisbane Times the advertisement was "disgracefully sexist" and the pay was well below the award rate.
"These are the kind of dodgy companies we have to protect apprentices from," ETUQ spokesman Scott Reichman said.
