POLOCROSSE teams from across Queensland will converge on Roma this weekend for Roma's annual polocrosse carnival.

Angela Latham, of the Roma Polocrosse Club, said the free entry was a great way to entice spectators.

"There will also be plenty of parking spaces so families and visitors can come out and enjoy all the fast-paced action that polocrosse is famous for," she said.

Ms Latham said the game of polocrosse was easy to understand and enjoyable to watch.

"It's a combination of polo, lacrosse and netball, and the players on horseback use a racquet with a net to carry the ball," Ms Latham said.

"Each team has six players, divided into two sections of three, who play alternate chukkas of six to eight minutes.

"There are line-outs, penalties, defence and attack play, racquet clashes and great skill."

Ms Latham said it's a perfect all-ages sport where players from six to 60 can play, which makes it a great family sport.

Along with the open and junior competitions, Roma is also hosting a ladies' chukka competition, a masters' competition and the zone championships across the weekend.

Play begins from 8am on Saturday and Sunday at the polocrosse club located 2km north of Roma on the Carnarvon Hwy.

A bar and canteen will operate all weekend selling burgers, sandwiches, hot chips, snacks and cold refreshments.
