Kangaroo shooter's double life exposed in police operation

A ROMA man living a double life was forced to face the music when police arrested him for drug trafficking, a court has heard.

Richard John Ward, 38, appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to drug trafficking over 17 months.

The former truck driver and professional kangaroo shooter, who previously lived in Chinchilla, bought and sold methylamphetamine in street level amounts for a "modest profit" between January 2017 and May 2018.

The court heard Ward was introduced to the drug at a cousin's bucks party and decided to start selling to get himself out of a tricky financial position, after being unable to work following a serious motorbike accident in 2015.

Ward's defence said he hid his trafficking from his family completely.

But in 2017 when police swooped and arrested Ward, he was forced to tell them about his double life which "very confronting experience for them all" and became a "circuit breaker" for his rehabilitation.

The court heard he made full admissions to police, which Justice Ann Lyons labelled "admirable".

"The trafficking period that the police were aware of through the intercepts was only about four months, so your admissions were significant," she said.

Ward was in jail for five months before he was granted bail to live in Roma, where he has worked for the past 12 months.

Justice Lyons was convinced that Ward had self-rehabilitated and complied with his bail conditions.

She took into account his "significant co-operation" with police and that the trafficking was "intermittent" over the 17 months.

Ward was sentenced to four years' jail, to be wholly suspended for five years. - NewsRegional
