Waste facility reopened as authorities clear explosives

UPDATE: Emergency services have left the dump where a stick of gelignite was found.

A police bomb detection dog as well as a Department of Natural Resources and Mines officer searched the scene before it was declared safe.

The stick of gelignite was taken by the department representative to be disposed of properly.

Toowoomba Regional Council has reopened the waste facility to the public.

1PM: An explosive detection dog is being brought to the Toowoomba dump where a stick of gelignite was found.

Darling Downs district officer Acting Inspector Regan Draheim said a commercially produced explosive was found at the Kleinton School Road waste facility this morning.

Act. Insp. Draheim believed the explosive had been used for tree clearing and had been moved in landfill to the dump by accident.

"The chances of it going off are relatively insignificant," Act. Insp. Draheim said.

He said Australian Federal Police dog was on its way to the scene to search for other potential explosives.

A Department of Natural Resources and Mines representative has also been called.

The find is not being treated as suspicious.

An exclusion zone has been set up around the dump.

11AM: A stick of gelignite found at a dump has caused an emergency situation north of Toowoomba.

Emergency services were called to a dump on Kleinton School Rd at 10.27am today.

A 600m exclusion zone has been set up around the dump.
