Experience of a lifetime as teen treks to Mount Everest

AN Agnes Water teen is having the time of his life on a trek to Mount Everest base camp.

Travis Cazaly, then 18, was last year selected to join a team from the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service on the trek.

The swimmer from Agnes Water was secretly nominated by his school principal to do the trek that aims to raise awareness about healthy living in central Queensland.

"I wasn't expecting it at all!" he said at the time.

"I've overcome some things in my life - maybe that's why I got selected."

Health service chief executive Len Richards said his committee had been looking for young people who would be good ambassadors to spread the word about good health, and might not otherwise have had an opportunity to go to Nepal.

Also on the trek are Will Nuss from Sapphire and Jack Duncan from Rockhampton.

The boys have seen snow for the first time and had snowball fights.

They painted a community building in Kunde on their rest day.

CQHealth staff Dr Jack Dixon, nursing director Wendy Hoey and Mr Richards visited the local Kunde Hospital.

On his Facebook page, Mr Richards said the team had woken to a surprise on day five (Monday) with more than one foot of snow having fallen.

"The kids were comfortable in their tents, and we were woken by the noise of snowball fights," he said.

"We did a small trek to Khomjung today, but we need to keep an eye on the weather to see what next."
