Engagement ring raises $1200 to help farmers in drought

A BEAUTIFUL engagement ring, donated to help a charity supporting drought-stricken farmers in south-west Queensland, is set to go for more than $1200 at auction.

Chinchilla not-for-profit group Drought Angels placed the yellow and gold diamond ring on Ebay on January 23, with all funds raised going towards buying hay bales and vouchers for desperate farmers.

Coordinator Jenny Gailey said the ring was donated by Caitlyn Sloss.

"She came up with this idea of donating the ring to us - she's an incredible woman," Mrs Gailey said.

"She hasn't made any requests about how to use the money - she's just given us the ring and wants us to make an impact."

Mrs Gailey said the drought across western Queensland, now in its sixth year, was causing farmers and their families to lose hope.

She said the charity's efforts were essential right now, and the funds raised from the ring could continue those efforts.

"I was talking to a farmer in Charleville and he hasn't seen any rain for 18 months - it's getting pretty dire," Mrs Gailey said.

"I would say it's as bad as it's ever been - the longer the drought goes on, the more people get depressed.

"It still hasn't broken and we're asking people again if they can dig deep."

Bidding closes at 8.30pm today, so go to the Drought Angels Facebook page or head to Ebay.
