EMILY Godfrey has been dancing since she could walk - and she owes her skills to legendary teacher Edrine Keegan.

The talented 12-year-old has taken inspiration from Ms Keegan as she nominates for a walk-on role in the Queensland Ballet Company's performance of the Nutcracker, as part of Suncorp's Wish Upon a Ballet Star competition.

Emily said her teacher's battle with breast cancer inspired her to progress with ballet.

"She's taught me everything I know," Emily said.

Emily's mother Lee said Ms Keegan's influence on her daughter had gone beyond the stage.

"Ms Keegan has gone through this battle without complaining or backing down and it's taught Emily to have hope," she said.

"She treats all of her kids like they are her own - like they are family."

Ms Keegan said Emily showed plenty of promise with her ballet.

"Em does a cross of classical, character and jazz," she said.

"Her main strength is classical but the Royal Academy of Dance teaches all sorts."

Entries for the competition will close on November 6.
