Eion's cattle fetch top prices at Roma store sale
HE may not look like your typical grazier but Eion Atkins sure knows what he's doing when it comes to cattle.
The third generation cattle farmer was at the Roma store sale on Tuesday and fetched sky-high prices for his steers on the day.
Mr Atkins, Coorada, Taroom, sold Shorthorn-cross steers to 456c/kg for 199kg to return $909/head and his Santa-cross heifers sold to 427c for 189kg to return $810.
"I've sold 70 steers and I've got 107 heifers to sell,” he said
"I've already sold half of the steers privately and then these are all my heifers I have .”
This time of year is earlier than what Mr Atkins would normally sell off his cattle but he said he just had to get in while the prices were so high.
"Prices are just too good to miss out on,” he said.
"It will take me a long time to keep a beast that long enough to get that sort of money again.”
"I usually hold on to them and pick my market a bit better and get a bit more weight gain in them.”
Mr Atkins said although he normally weighted to beef them up until the desired weight sometimes it just is better economically to sell them while the market is up.
"At the moment the market is just asking for it so I just thought send them,” he said.
"They haven't cost me a cent.”
"All they've coast is a few bales of hay to wean them and then I just had to stick them in a truck and get them here”
"If you can get top dollar for them no matter how light they are you just bring them in.”
