‘Eerie’ feeling at the Roma Picnics

THOUSANDS of spectators were due to flock at the Roma Picnic Races this weekend, but due to the COVID-19 crisis, horses lapped to an empty stadium.

The Roma Picnic Race cub announced on March 16 that the club would proceed with a five race program to provide support to the country racing community.

Roma Picnic Race Club President, Danny Wells said the Roma Turf Club and Picnic Races joined on Saturday to ensure the continuity of racing.

“It went really well – we had some good nominations,” he said.

“All the jockeys and trainers were really appreciative of it going ahead.

“There’s no financial gain for our clubs but just to ensure racing goes ahead and prize money goes back to the owners, jockeys and trainers.”

The president said Racing Queensland is supportive of continuing to have these race meets.

“Today was a very different feeling to what everyone is normally used to,” he said.

“But the racing industry employs a lot of people directly and indirectly so it’s good they’re still going ahead.”

Going forward, Racing Queensland plan to have TAB meets in Roma every second weekend, altering with Charleville and Oakey.

“It will ensure people are employed for as long as possible,” Mr Wells said.

“Thank you to the Roma Turf Club for assisting the Roma Picnic Raecs in running of the day – we really appreciate their help.”

Downs country representative and Roma race caller Peter Flynn said it was an eerie feeling as he called the five races to virtually no crowd.

“It was particularly odd without bookmakers and punters yelling,” he said.

“Besides that, the races themselves went well and it was a very good day of racing.

“Good field and very competitive.”
