Echidnas to wrap up season at upcoming awards night

RUGBY UNION: Their final position on the ladder might not show it, but the Roma Echidnas have won more games in this year's A-grade season than over the past few years, according to president Charles Murphy.

The local union teams will officially wrap up their 2016 season at next month's Awards Night, with the club inviting former Wallabies player Glen Ella to present the official trophies and awards for outstanding players.

In the A-grade draw, the Echidnas finished 7th out of the 8 competing teams in the Downs Rugby Union competition, falling behind USQ Saints (31) with 16 points.

Dalby Wheatmen were declared the champions after triumphing over the Goondiwindi Emus 21-15.

Murphy said it was a season of ups and downs for the club, with both A and B-grade enjoying underdog wins against teams high on the table including Toowoomba and USQ.

"The core of the group definitely had a good season; we won more games in A-grade this year compared to the last few years as a club,” he said.

"There were some losses that didn't reflect the team we had, and that was either due to not enough depth of players or poor travelling with away games.”

Murphy particularly praised the performance of newcomers Kyle Maclachlin and Tom Bennam, who had both enjoyed their first full season with the club.

"There's a bit of new blood, and we'd like to see new young players come through for next season,” he said.

"Next season, we're looking at getting more players in and seeing how many teams we can get.”

The Awards Dinner will be held at the Gallas Fox Park clubhouse on October 7. Tickets are priced at $50.
