Roma Echidnas snatch a victory from UQ Gatton

ROMA Echidnas are getting ready for Old Boys Day this Saturday, off the back of a win at Saturday's home game.

The team had double the reason to celebrate on the weekend for taking home a win and giving recognition to their sponsors.

After the Toowoomba Highfields B-grade side forfeited the morning of the match, it was left to the A-grade boys to show them what Roma is made of.

The annual sponsors' day saw the boys take on UQ Gatton in a thrilling main match.

The boys held the lead throughout the match, but not without contention from the UQ side.

The Echidnas dominated in the first half and at half-time the Roma boys sat ahead, 19-4.

But coming back fresh in the second half, the UQ boys gave it their all with some impressive attacking.

The comeback wasn't enough to pull the Gatton boys over the line though, with the Echidnas finishing on top with 29-24.

Echidnas coach Jason Schefe said the boys rustled up the effort to bring home the win.

"There were some really good crunching tackles as Gatton tried to run down the sidelines," he said.

"Fullback Shaun Law put in some great tackles and saved at least two tries from Gatton."

Schefe said standout players of the game were Terry Plower with his great work around the paddock and John Frith who had a good game overall. He also mentioned Shaun Law and his try-saving skills.

The day wasn't just about the footy, as the union club took the chance to say thank you to its sponsors.

Sponsors were given drinks tickets and the Santos marquee was set up for them as a VIP area.

"We wouldn't be where we are without all the sponsors," Mr Schefe said.

The Echidnas are sitting at number five in the Risdon Cup ladder and if they can keep their place, this will ensure them a spot in the competition final.

There are only two more Echidnas home games left in the season, including Old Boys Day on the weekend,

The Echidnas will play off against St George before players and supporters head to the Explorers Convention Centre for a special Old Boys dinner.

On July 25, the Roma Rugby Union Ladies Auxiliary (RELAx) will host a premier screening of the Great Gatsby at the Roma Cinema.
