Echidna's put up a strong front as season kicks off

RUGBY UNION: Following a rocky start to the 2018 season, the mighty Echidnas are in full strength, ready for a promising season.

Disaster struck the club last year after they failed to field enough players for their A and C-grade teams for the first match of the season against Condamine, putting their position in the Darling Downs District Rugby Union at risk.

Determined to not let history repeat, this year's Echidnas' side is stronger than ever.

Over the past few weeks new and old faces of the club have slogged it out on the field to build up their skills heading into the first match this weekend.

Echidnas club committee member David Hickey the year was setting up to be an exciting year.

The Roma Echidnas will travel to Toowoomba tomorrow to play Highfields for a 4pm kick off, fielding sides for A and C-grades.

"The team are looking alright going heading into the weekend. They work well together and they are developing a bit of a culture,” Hickey said.

"It is looking to be a pretty exciting year and we have some guys who are pretty skilled on the field and it is quiet a young side.

"They all communicate well and that was proved at the Roma Rugby Nines weekend where they came as the underdogs to get runners up in the grand final.”

This year Echidnas will host home matches on April 27, May 18, 25, June 15, 22, 29 and July 13.

This Wednesday the Echidnas will host the Classic Wallabies at training.

Come watch the two teams train and their company at the Ants Nest Bar for a barbecue and a beer.
