Echidnas prove to be untouchable
The experience of competing against tough competition at the Hottest 7s in the World in Darwin has done the Roma Echidnas a world of good.
Ed Cross, Aaron Seaman, Aaron Bonomi, Greg Marks, Ryan Ormiston, Matt Howse and Daniel Lucas pulled on the Echidnas jersey and travelled to Barcaldine to compete in the Barcaldine 7s Rugby Competition.
After travelling over 600km and playing in nearly 40 degree heat, the Echidnas prevailed as tournament champions.
With only 30 seconds left on the clock in the deciding match against the Longreach Rustlers, Aaron Seaman pulled off a great run from a penalty tap to score next to the posts.
The converted try sealed victory for the boys from Roma with a 33-29 score line.
But holding the silverware was no easy task.
The Echidnas only took seven players to Barcaldine and fly-half Matt Howse said that playing without reserves was very tough.
"By the last game the boys were out on their feet," Howse said.
Having the experience of Darwin, the Echidnas were immediately one step ahead.
"Playing in Darwin helped with learning the structure of 7s generally," he said.
"We just tried to spread it wide rather than up through the ruck this time.
"And with the opposition used to the 15-a-side format it took them a while to catch on."
Despite 7s being a different form of rugby to the 15-a-side game, Howse said the amount of fitness they've gained from the two pre-season tournaments is a massive advantage coming into the home and away season.
The club is thankful for the work of Dan Lucas whose time and effort made both the trips to Darwin and Barcaldine a reality.
Roma will host a game between Darling Downs and Central Queensland on March 10.
