Echidnas poised to make history en route to grand final
RUGBY UNION: The Echidnas will face their toughest rivals in Goodiwindi, with a win set to make club history by sending them straight to the grand final for the first time since 2006.
Going down to the Emus 59-7 in their last face-off, club president Richard Bright said the team knew it was going to be an extremely tough game to win.
"We are realists, we haven't managed to beat the Emus this season so we will have to give it all we've got,” Bright said.
"The boys managed to get this far, so we know they wouldn't be playing if they didn't have a chance of taking home the victory.
"We'll stick to the same game plan we've been playing all year.
"It's got us this far.”
A nail-biting win in Super Saturday last weekend saw the Echidnas take down the Toowoomba Rangers 41-38 in extra time.
After 110 minutes of gruelling football, Ben Bright kicked a final penalty goal to secure the win for the hometown hosts.
"It was a great win, all the boys showed good composure and never doubted they could claw their way back,” Bright said.
"Even after being down 17-3 at half-time, they kept hanging in there and plugging away, which just shows the great belief the boys have in our game plan.”
USQ Saints and Toowoomba Rangers play off in the elimination game this weekend, with the winner going on to play the loser of the top-of-the-table clash between Emus and Echidnas.
Roma Echidnas have rapidly improved from second last in 2018 to climb to second in the standings of this year's Risdon Cup.
"We've had a few good quality additions this year that have made a massive difference,” Bright said.
"Everyone is just enjoying their rugby and once you get a few wins, the confidence starts building and it becomes a ripple effect.”
