Echidnas look ahead to Frillies
RUGBY: Finals glory could again be on the cards for the Roma Echidnas in the B-Grade Risdon Cup competition after a hard-fought 23-10 win over the Warwick Water Rats.
Having played finals rugby last year, the Echidnas are now just three points behind Warwick on the ladder following their bonus-point victory at home on the weekend.
Club president Charles Murphy said in his weekly report the closeness of the match was not reflected on the scoreboard.
“Warwick came out strong and it was a close match for most of it, with the Echidnas overrunning the Rats only towards the end of the game,” he said.
“It was a good hit out for B-Grade to build momentum for their next match against the Cods at the Rugby Races.”
Roma will once again host the Rugby Races on June 25 at Bassett Park, and have a serious chance of knocking over a Cods side that has won just two matches all year.
“A win at the Rugby Races against a struggling Condamine outfit will really lift the boys on the ladder,” Murphy said.
A-Grade, who enjoyed a bye this weekend since Warwick has no top level side, will travel down to St George to face a Frillnecks side desperate for their first win of the season.
Roma is only a mathematical chance of making finals in A-Grade and will need to win a majority of their remaining seven games to be in the running.
But a strong win against St George would keep the boys in blue away from the wooden spoon and give them a chance to overtake UQ Gatton on the competition ladder.
But Murphy warned they would not be taking St George lightly.
