Echidnas in danger of missing 2018 season
RUGBY UNION: The Roma Echidnas are in danger of being kicked out of the Darling Downs District Rugby Union in 2018 after failing to field enough players for their A and C grade teams for their match in Condamine on Saturday.
The disastrous possibility would halt 35 straight seasons of competition and could have dire consequences for rugby union in the Maranoa.
Club President Nick Cook said that the club needed to see immediate interest and desire from players to turn their season's prospects around.
"Basically we need players registered online, we need people at training just so we can move forward because at the moment, there's just a lack of commitment out there for the full season,” he said.
"I know it's very difficult as we are the most travelled team in the competition but this is urgent and we need to get this sorted otherwise the 2018 season could be over.
"It's going to be very hard to get back in the competition if it does fold and we'd have to have a very compelling case in front of Downs Rugby to get back in.”
The Echidnas will have the chance to build strong player support early in the season by hosting four consecutive home games starting with USQ on April 7.
The club encourages all players wishing to compete this season to come to training at the rugby club tonight at 6.30pm
