Echidnas hoping for four in a row at Rugby Races

RUGBY: What captain Tom Capel holds in his hands is what his Roma Echidnas hope to claim on Saturday afternoon when they face the Condamine Cods at the Roma Rugby Races.

The annual fixture between the sides at Bassett Park will be complemented by a bumper race meet for the Roma Turf Club, which has organised seven races for punters to enjoy.

Roma has not won the match in recent years, but Capel remembers when the proud club upset Goondiwindi back in 2011, and hopes to achieve victory in at least one grade on the weekend.

“There’s a fair amount of excitement from the boys for this clash,” he said.

“We’ve won three matches across both grades in as many weeks, so we’d like to keep that going.”

Echidnas club president and co-coach Charles Murphy said the event was one of Roma’s favourite rounds of the season, with a bumper crowd expected for Saturday.

“It’s in the top three (games of the year) certainly – this will be four wins in a row (if we beat Condamine) and in B-grade it will give us a good chance at finals,” he said.

“It’s one of our bigger crowds and we’d like to make a special thanks to the Roma Turf Club for their support over the years.”

The Echidnas sit above Condamine on the B-grade ladder and are only 10 competition points behind the Cods in A-grade, which could be halved with a bonus-point win on Saturday.

Roma Turf Club secretary Jackie Erickson said punters would be treated well with predictions of cold weather.

“This is one of two winter race meetings and we’ll have heaters out for people as well as a soup kitchen,” she said.

The first race will commence from 12.30pm at Bassett Park, with the B-grade match to kick-off at 4.15pm.

Fashion and live entertainment will be on show as well to keep patrons entertained.
