Echidnas have one last chance for finals berth
Rugby Union: Keeping their heads high after losing the first grand-final qualifier, the Roma Echidnas can't help but think about how far they have come this year.
Despite a 49-11 loss to Goondiwindi Emus on Saturday, the boys have one last chance to reach the grand final this weekend, when they host Toowoomba Rangers as part of Super Saturday Three.
Star player Liam Murray- Walker said, despite their best efforts on the weekend, Goondiwindi was simply a stronger team.
"We were feeling confident going into the game but Goondi has always been a really well-structured team," Murray-Walker said.
"They're well drilled, their whole town's culture is rugby and their prep is always good.
"Everything they do is 100 per cent: The only way to challenge that is if we man up and front up to the challenge.
"We need to improve on our one-on-one tackles.
"When we do commit, we need to try and stick with it and slow the ball down.
"We could also probably improve on our line speed on their defence, we should be coming up a bit harder and pushing them back."
Murray-Walker admits his squad didn't have the best week of preparation but is hopeful the boys can rally together this week.
"We are playing Rangers again this weekend: That's three out of four weeks we're playing them," he said.
"We've had the win, we're feeling confident we can get another win this weekend.
"But they will be a lot harder this time, they'll be feeling it to push a little harder.
"Going into the game, I think we need to prepare during the week a lot better and get the boys to training.
"If we win next weekend, we will play Goondi again in the final in Toowoomba.
"We're not looking that far forward, we have to get through this week first."
The Echidnas will host Super Saturday Three at Gallas Fox Park on Saturday.
