Echidnas celebrate as two share top accolades
RUGBY UNION: The Roma Echidnas have toasted the 2018 season with an intimate presentation night on Friday.
The club, which endured a mixed season in terms of results, took the opportunity to recognise individuals who demonstrated excellence on the field.
In an unexpected twist, two names were announced as the A-grade players' player award winners.
Coming as no surprise were the identity of the winners, with AJ Riley and Nathan Garvie claiming the overall honours for a season of excellence.
Echidnas president Nick Cook reflected on the contributions of AJ and Nathan during the season.
"Nathan has been one of our most consistent players this season and helped get the bus trips going with a couple of dress-up themes and AJ is always there on the field when you need him,” he said.
In C grade, Neil Dickinson-Jones took out the players' player honours with his tireless dedication to showing up each week earning the admiration of teammates and officials.
"Neil is one of our oldest players at 53 and travels from Charleville so he deserves a big shout-out,” Cook said.
In other awards, Tim Hughes received the centurion award for playing more than 100 games for the club while Mick Galdal, Damian Barsby and Justin Garvie also received special mentions.
"Mick has been diagnosed with terminal cancer but has still been the first one to help out even though he has a lot of other things on his plate at the moment,” Cook said.
"A big shout-out also goes to Damian Barsby; he did a lot of chasing up of players prior to a game and made sure they would be there on game day.
"A special mention also need to go to Justin Garvie, who has been the glue holding the club together for a long time.”
Jack Hannah won the A-grade best and fairest award while Danny Wells took out the equivalent award in C grade.
