Man fined $5500 after ignoring police and crashing car

AN ANDERGROVE man admitted he had drunk eight or nine beers and 10 Jim Beam and cokes prior to driving and ignoring police directions to stop.

A 10-minute police pursuit ensued, until the man's vehicle crashed into a wire guard south of Calen and 29-year-old Brendan Ross Morgan was found unconscious and smelling of liquor.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Duncan Erskine told Mackay Magistrates Court that in the early hours of August 1, police heard reports of a drunk driver.

At 4.31am, police found Morgan and as they followed him, they witnessed him twice misjudge corners and drive entirely onto the wrong side of the road.

Snr Const Erskine said police had contacted Morgan through radio and told him to stop.

He said Morgan had responded by saying in slurred speech: "I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm driving in the white lines".

At 4.41am he crashed.

Snr Const Erskine said about 3.40am that morning Morgan had also taken a 25-pack of Winfields cigarettes from the BP service station at Coninsby without paying.

He said Morgan had given an offensive gesture as he drove away.

Defence solicitor Chris Colwill said Morgan had had an argument with his wife and could recall very little due to intoxication.

Mr Colwill said Morgan had no drink driving history.

Magistrates Nerida Wilson fined Morgan $5500 and placed him on probation for 12 months.

His licence was disqualified for two years for dangerous operation of a vehicle and another two years for failing to stop on police direction.
