Drum and fife to bringing carols to life

AN AFRICAN drum and an open-holed flute aren't the first things you think about when you talk Christmas carols.

But the Combined Christian Churches are mixing up this year's Rocking Around the Christmas Tree carols, with a nine-piece group of seven vocalists, a flautist and Djembe drum player performing an old French carol.

The piece, titled Pat-a-Pan, was found by vocalist Jodie Beitz, who fell in love with it.

"It's a traditional French carol - it's something different and quite appropriate, I feel, after recent tragic events," she said.

Ms Beitz reached out through Facebook to find someone to play the flute - and it so happened flautist Renee Jury was available.

"I haven't played much since university but I thought now was a good time," she said.

The carols will feature a number of different acts, including main performer Sean W Smith.

The event will run on November 29 at the Roma Cultural Centre from 4.30pm.
