Drug dealer 'needs help rather than jail'

AN EIGHT-MONTH drug dealing business ended when police raided Kelli Margaret Armstrong's home.

Maroochydore District Court heard on Monday that Armstrong, 46, had been collecting money from five customers at Mooloolaba and buying marijuana in bulk before supplying it to them.

She was estimated to have had a turnover of about $10,800 between September 2014 and May last year.

It was agreed her profit would have only been a small portion of the total turnover.

Defence barrister Simon Lewis tendered letters to the court which detailed Armstrong's mental health issues.

Mr Lewis said Armstrong's use of marijuana exacerbated her issues, including post traumatic stress disorder.

"She is a woman that needs help rather than jail," Mr Lewis said.

Judge John Robertson said Armstrong's conduct was commercial activity but at a very low level.

He noted Armstrong had a vulnerable personality and had mental health concerns.

"It certainly cannot be treated by the use of cannabis," Judge Robertson said.

Armstrong was sentenced to two years in jail, suspended immediately.

She was also placed on a two-year probation order.
