Drink-driving truckie taken off the road

A TRUCKIE busted drink-driving after losing control of his road train on the Stuart Highway last month has been banned from the road.

Omer Hassan Eltayeb, 34, pleaded guilty in the Darwin Local Court to driving a vehicle with a gross mass of more than 15 tonnes with alcohol in his blood and driving without due care.

The court heard Eltayeb was driving the truck between Larrimah and Daly Waters on the evening of May 5 when he "lost control" and swerved off the road.

Eltayeb tried to steer the "fully laden" road train back onto the road but the third trailer rolled.

He continued to drive for a short distance before coming to a stop some time between 8pm and 9pm.

He was breath-tested at the Mataranka police station about 9.45pm and returned a reading of 0.071 but denied he had been drink-driving.

When asked why he was over the limit, Eltayeb told police he "wasn't driving after consuming alcohol" and the crash was an accident.

He told Judge Greg Cavanagh he had one beer after the crash to calm his nerves.

"I was a bit shaken and made the wrong choice," he said.

Road train drivers must have a blood-alcohol content of 0.00 and while a disqualification is only mandatory for a second offence, Mr Cavanagh said a three-month ban was warranted in the circumstances.

"It's a serious episode of careless driving on the Stuart Highway," he said.

Eltayeb was also fined $1000 and must pay $300 in victim levies.
