Double dissolution could oust crossbenchers

TALKS at the highest levels of the Abbott government about a double dissolution election should serve as a warning to crossbenchers elected on fractions of a margin, one said on Thursday.

A double dissolution means all senators and MPs face a single election.

After reports unnamed government frontbenchers had discussed a potential "double D" election, on Thursday several ministers denied an election would be pursued ahead of the usual electoral cycle.

But Liberal Democratic Senator David Leyonhjelm said Education Minister Christopher Pyne mentioned it during talks on the higher education package.

While Sen Leyonhjelm said he didn't believe it was a "threat" to him, he said it should serve as a warning to all Senate crossbenchers.

He said those elected in 2013 due to complex preference deals could see themselves out of a job if the government pursued it.
