'Dopey' Russians may still be dumped from Rio Olympics

RUSSIAN athletes are still in contention for the 2016 Rio Olympics after officials last night failed to ban them for breaching strict doping rules.

Following an emergency executive board meeting in Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee announce it was exploring 'legal options' despite being under intense international pressure to kick the country out of the sporting event, which starts on August 5.

The IOC committee held off on the decision as it waits for a Court of Arbitration for Sport finding.

That finding is due tomorrow and it concerns a dispute between Russia, 68 Russian athletes and the International Association of Athletics Federation, which banned Russia from participating in the Olympics' track and field program this year.

CAS issued the ban after a World Anti-Doping Agency investigation found there was evidence to suggest widespread state-sanctioned doping by Russian Olympians during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

The report also found officials went out of their way to cover-up the alleged cheating.

"With regard to the participation of Russian athletes in the Olympic Games Rio 2016, the IOC will carefully evaluate the IP Report," the IOC said in a statement a few hours ago.

"It will explore the legal options with regard to a collective ban of all Russian athletes for the Olympic Games 2016 versus the right to individual justice." - ARM NEWSDESK
