Domestic violence - my story

The following is an anonymous account from a reader - follow our campaign to end domestic violence...

MY experience with domestic violence culminated in a major assault on the 31st January 2013.

My husband left which was a blessing in disguise. My husband first hit me four weeks after we had been married, prior to this there had been no display of this type of behaviour.

I found the experience with police and support services disappointing. When my partner breached the AVO it took police 45 minutes to arrive (from Coffs Harbour) and my husband had left.

The sergeant had the unempathetic statement, "Perhaps it is sour grapes on your behalf".

The support services drop you as soon as the court appearance is over. Only when the judges and police start taking this crime seriously will it stop.

The judges treat this crime as a joke, the police are unsupportive. I watched the court list for a while after my experience, perhaps you should look at publishing them, there are so many AVO/Domestic violence cases it is disgusting.

This crime is not relegated to lower socio-economic classes, it is every man's crime, from the very judges who sit behind the bench, letting these guys off lightly, to the poorest man earning a meagre wage.

All I can say is wake up judges, no hero hits a woman.
